My first reaction is "iPod, get the iPod!" because you've always struck me as a musical-kind-of-iPod-sort-or-guy. And, let's face it, iPods are sweet. I also have some sort of bias against digital cameras because I love my optical SLR so much. Hey, I've got another idea for you: since CVS and Walgreens and all those sorts of places will now put all your film exposures on a kodak cd for really cheap, you could get a nicer optical camera for the same price you could get a digital and then have your pictures digitized. Well, that sort of works. There are still advantages to a digital over an optical (ie you can see the picture immediately after taking it), and really I'm giving you a third choice instead of helping you pick between two, but I've always been really good at making things more complicated than they need to be. That's why I want to go to grad school: I want to learn how to problematize better. Anyways, I've probably been no help (unless you read the "get the iPod" part and then skip the rest), so I'll shut up now.
Apple sold over 4.5 million IPods this past holiday season. Crazy.
well, my dad actually already has a really nice SLR camera that he hasn't used in ages. i think i'd probably be able to permanently borrow his camera. what i want the digital is just to carry around with me and take quick snapshots...

Digital cameras are great, but I vote for the ipod. You can use it for all kinds of audio besides music. I just got one for Christmas and I intend to use it to listen to the Bible, sermons (sermonaudio.com), lectures, audiobooks, Japanese lessons, and anything else I can find.
Unless you're really snap happy. I vote iPod, but I go through only about 3 rolls of film per year. I have a bias.
ok, so now the question is a normal iPod, or an iPod mini?

I would wait. Apple's new product line is coming out soon. I will likely included IPODs with greater storage for the same price, or a reduction in price of the IPOD pictures (a much better model I might add). On the other hand, I love the Elph series of digital cameras. They are small and fast.
